The Ipswich 'Sackers' Witches took the required three league cup points at Foxhall on Thursday when they beat the Plymouth 'SkillsGroup' Devils 57-33
Top scorer for Ipswich was their flying number one, Danny King, with a faultless 15 point maximum; reserve Nico Covatti also scored his first paid 15 point maximum in a Witches racejacket on 12+3. Ryan Fisher topped the Plymouth scorecard on 10 points with ex-Witch Morten Risager close behind on 9+1, Meeting sponsors 'Holmes Plant & Construction Hire' nominated Danny King, Rohan Tungate, Cameron Heeps & Nico Covatti for the new 'Witches Shoot Out' race after the main meeting had been completed. Danny yet again roared from the tapes but Rohan wasn't far behind and the two battled for four pulsating laps with Danny eventually taking the chequered flag with Nico finishing in third place.
Unfortunately both sides had a rider withdrawn before four races had been completed. Ipswich lost Gino Manzares (back & shoulder) after he fell heavily on the first lap of heat three and in the following heat Plymouth's Kyle Newman (arm, elbow) fell while challenging Nico Covatti towards the end of the race. We send both riders our best wishes for a speedy recovery & will issue any updates as they are received.
After a shared first heat the Ipswich reserves put their team ahead with a 5-1 after Nico Covatti stalked and finally overtook Ashley Morris on the very last corner of the heat. Heats three & four were stopped due to aforementioned falls and both teams took a 5-1 leaving Ipswich four ahead. After a 4-2 to Plymouth in heat five Ipswich got their heads down and started to build up a lead again and had pulled fourteen points clear after heat eleven.
Jack Holder was nominated for a tactical ride in heat twelve for Plymouth but it was the Ipswich reserve pairing of Covatti & Nielsen that headed the race with Jack Holder's bike then coming to a dramatic stop on bend four of lap three when he was placed third. Danny King & Rohan Tungate went in to heat thirteen both unbeaten by an opponent but Ryan Fisher put a stop to at least one of them acheiving a maximum by just staying ahead of a hard charging Rohan Tungate. Heat fifteen saw Danny King cruise to his fifth heat win of the night with Rohan Tungate passing first Morten Risager & then Ryan Fisher to join his team mate at the front for a final Ipswich 5-1 of the night.
Ipswich team manager, Phil Hilton, admitted afterwards that his team took a while to get started but Gino's injury & susbequent withdrawal so early on didn;t help with this. "It was another convincing win on the face of it but we did seem to take a while to really get going. Oddly, we seemed to pick ourselves up after heat four & Newman's withdrawal. What can I say about Danny, I'm already starting to run out of superlatives to describe his excellent performances! The two reserves deserve a mention as well; they covered really well for Gino as well as scoring highly in their own programmed rides. Now we need to carry this form to Somerset tomorrow and bring some points back to keep us moving up the League Cup table. Most nerve-wrecking race for me tonight? The new Witches shoot-out - watching my best riders throwing their bikes at each other is not my favourite way to wind down after a meeting but I know the fans will love it!"
Bank Holiday News (Monday 4th May): Kids Go Free (with a paying adult). There will be poster signing by all Ipswich riders and a track walk (preparation & weather permitting). Both of these are for a limited time so get there early to avoid disappointment! Gates open at 12:30pm, parade at 1:45pm & first race at 2:00pm.
