The Ipswich 'Sackers' Witches won a tough battle against the Scunthorpe Scorpions tonight and returned home with three league points.
Rohan Tungate top scored for Ipswich on 11 and skipper Danny King gave great support on 10+1. Ryan Douglas was top Scorpion and also scored 11 points.
Although Scunthorpe initially took the lead after a 5-1 in the first heat Ipswich had drawn level and then taken the lead by heat five. They retained this until heat ten when the home side got back level with their second & final 5-1 of the evening.
Three shared heats followed and then in the final two heats Ipswich scored two 4-2s to secure three league points.
Unfortunately an excellent speedway meeting was marred by a few incidents both on & off the track and the referee had to issue fines to riders from both sides.
The most talked about clash came at the end of heat ten when a hard charging Rohan Tungate while challenging Alex Davies for second place right up to & across the finishing line was unable to avoid running into race winner Josh Auty who had already started to slow down ahead of them.
Rohan issued this statement after the meeting: "Regarding tonight's incident with Josh Auty. It was not intentional; I was racing to the line against Alex Davies. We both raced past the line and going in to turns 1 & 2 Josh had shut the throttle off and I was unable to avoid him. Most riders will understand that if you shut the throttle off straight after the finish line it will be more dangerous. I hope this clears things up and I hope Josh is ok".
Ipswich team manager, Phil Hilton, was pleased with the result: "That was a very hard fought meeting tonight but we got there in the end with everyone chipping in for the win. It's a shame about all the incidents and the one between Rohan & Josh caused a lengthy stoppage while views were aired, etc. The referee agreed with us that it was an accident but Rohan was fined as a result. If you put all that aside the track was in excellent condition and it produced some very good racing for the fans. We would like to wish Scunthorpe speedway the very best of luck in retaining the sport at their track - they certainly deserve to based on the standard of entertainment provided here tonight. We also hope Josh quickly recovers from any injury he sustained."
An Ipswich fan who travelled to Scunthorpe summed it all up by saying: "If you ignore all the 'extras' between riders it was a cracking meeting with some of the best racing I have seen here!"
