Sun 20th Sep 2015
Ipswich Speedway brings the curtain down on their 2015 season this Thursday (24th September) with their traditional finale, the 16 Lap Classic. All seven Witches riders will take part and Alex Davies, Bradley Wilson-Dean, Carl Wilkinson, Kevin Doolan & Scott Nicholls will join them.
First staged in 1979 the 16 lap final has been described as the most gruelling speedway race in the world; it produces the unique spectacle of eight riders, off two starting gates, all heading towards the first bend at the same time. Something often missed by the crowd at the start of the final is the challenge posed for the start marshal on the first grid who has to leave the track before the riders from the second grid reach him! Before the final takes place the riders compete in 12 qualifying heats and if they fail to reach the grand final they compete in a 6-lap consolation final.
Witches reserve Stefan Nielsen finished joint tenth in the World U21 Championship scoring 15 points over the three rounds that finished in Pardubice, Czech Republic on Saturday.
